On 'My Working Class Hero,' the Finnish pianist Iiro Rantala pays tribute to this master of modern song. Throughout the whole album, what may well sound effortless is in fact the result of a long and exacting process by which Rantala - in close discussion with producer Siggi Loch - has worked scrupulously on transforming the original material/5(10). Working Class Hero, a much less examined tune, is opened with deftly plucked strings sounding so natural that it takes a moment to work out quite what's going on. Just Like Starting Over sounds like a song from a musical, with Rantala finding the rich harmonies and letting them sing.

  2. If you know Rantala's work, you know he can't easily be classified into any one genre, though jazz seems the best fit. He just does what he does, and the result is pure musicality. The string players playing with him are top notch, and the whole album has drive and good tunes. The recording is very clear and has exactly the right space.
  3. After the album “My Working Class Hero,” dedicated to John Lennon and “Tears for Esbjörn,” a homage to the influential Swedish pianist, “How Long Is Now?” puts the spotlight fairly and squarely back on to the Finnish pianist, composer and life-force Iiro Rantala.

  7. The solo recording “My Working Class Hero” is a dialogue with many dimensions: between Rantala and the instrument, between the room and its acoustics, with jazz legacy and pop history, and plainly between the pianist and his icon John Lennon. Lennon's music is for him completely current and at the same time timelessly important.
